£2m spend for flood defence pump

Millennium Way
Millennium Way in Goole is prone to flooding

Residents in a town in the East Riding of Yorkshire have been told the installation of a new pumping system will reduce the risk of flooding.

Yorkshire Water will build a pumping station next to Sandhall Lane Residential Home in Goole and update the sewers around Millennium Way.

A spokesperson said the £1.9m scheme could never "flood-proof" an area, just reduce the risk of flooding in homes.

In August several homes were flooded in the area after torrential downpours.

Project manager Rachael Gruhn said: "Having your home flooded is one of the worst experiences imaginable.

"This is why we are acting to invest nearly £2 million to help the sewer system cope with the effects of prolonged or heavy rain".

Work is expected to take four months while the station is built and the sewers replaced.

The plans will be on display at the Millhill Road Community Centre in Goole on 4 December for residents to view.
